Liviu Dragnea, a Romanian Social Democratic politician who has been jailed for corruption, cannot enter the United States indefinitely. The measure was announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a statement on Thursday.
Under the penalty, Liviu Dragnea will not be allowed to enter the United States indefinitely. The ban also applies to two children of a politician.
“The announced measure is a strong message of the United States’ commitment to fighting corruption and upholding the rule of law in Romania,” the head of American diplomacy said in a statement.
The former leader of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) was sentenced to three and a half years in prison last year for a corruption case, and although the 56-year-old politician, who has denied the charges all the way, has appealed to his court.
Liviu Dragnea was President of the Lower House of the Romanian Parliament, served as Minister of the Interior in the first Boc government for two months in 2009 and as head of the administrative and regional development department of the second Ponta government between 2012 and 2016.
